Why Sunshine Grown?
At Wind Hill Growers, we focus on sunshine grown cannabis. This means we produce primarily outdoor and in a greenhouse. This supports our philosophy of environmentalism, as well as producing the best quality product at a competitive price.
There are three factors that influence this decision:
1. It’s better for the environment: There is a (in)famous study in the cannabis industry by Evan Mills published in the Journal of Energy Policy in 2011, where he estimated that cannabis production in the United States uses 1% of the electricity nationwide.
This makes a single joint the equivalent of leaving a 100 watt light bulb on for 17 hours.
Mills’ methodology has been questioned and perhaps it is less than 1%, although production has been increasing rapidly since 2011. Regardless, it’s clear that there is a huge environmental cost to cannabis production. Medicinal marijuana enjoys a very “green” reputation and we believe it is incumbent on growers to minimize environmental costs.
2. Best quality product: The sun has a much broader spectrum than any combination of grow lights. The plant is able to fully utilize this broad spectrum to produce the most cannabinoids and terpenes (the medicine).
Traditionally, outdoor has often been lower quality, but this is more a reflection of how it is treated post-harvest. It can be difficult for growers to handle the larger plants and harvests produced outdoors. This is where experience and professionalism come into play.
When well cared for, outdoor and greenhouse grown allows the plant to fully realize its genetic potential.
3. Price: While indoor grown cannabis enjoys the reputation of being top quality, it also has the price point to match, reflecting the huge overhead to buy and run lights and atmospheric conditioners. It’s true, it’s easier to put out a consistent product indoors due to more control. This consistency comes at a huge cost, however. The wholesale cannabis market has plunged nationwide which has caused producers to look carefully at how they are producing.
No other plant is grown indoors on a commercial scale. The indoor growing phenomenon is a result of prohibition and needs to end with it.
As organic farmers and gardeners, we understand that the best produce comes from a fine organic soil and the spectrum of light that only the sun can provide. Why would your cannabis be any different?
